Week 1A:  Let's get blogging

This is my first go at creating a blog and posting to it so that you will be interested in reading it and coming back for more information.  Therefore, let’s start at the beginning; choosing a theme to entice you.

Here are the reasons I chose the Notable theme:

1.    This theme is notable as an extension of my personality, primarily striving for organized minimalism.  I want to present you with information to quickly grasp without clutter on your screen.  As a fellow achiever, I’d like to help you comfortably reach your goal of grasping all the information in one full swoop.

2.   This theme is notable for a purposeful format with one section of text with one photo.  You can chose to digest each morsel by reading the text or by looking a picture (quietly speaking a thousand words).   Once I learn how to format the photos with text, I plan on using clever photos with simplicity for focus rather than distraction.

3.   This theme is also notable for a cheerful pink color scheme.  I look forward to sharing representations of the meaning of the color pink and some of its distinctive shades.   Look for more details in future posts!

Now let’s take a look at my opinion on which social media platforms; personal versus business.

Personal:

I feel Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest are the best social media platforms to tell you about me personally.

On Facebook, I can tell you what’s happening with me, where I have visited, how I feel, ask my friends questions and  show you photos of interesting finds, friends, family and me!  I can even join groups with people with similar interests and converse with them to reminisce and provide resources.

I don’t really use Instagram, but it is quite visual.  It can show several photos to quickly give an overview of a trip or a subject or to create a story.

Pinterest is great when looking for or sharing ideas on projects.   It can also spur on ideas to create items.

Business:

I feel the best platforms to showcase my business are a Facebook business page, a Google my Business page (for businesses with a local location) and sharing videos on a YouTube channel.

On a Facebook business page, a brand can build a following of consumers.  These customers can then share your page, posts, photos, etc.  A share is golden as it exponentially increases a brand’s reach.    A business can communicate with its customers to include, promotions, new products, and gain reviews. By engaging in two-way conversation, it encourages customers’ comments to be more credible than the brand’s voice.

A Google My Business Page is important for local searches so that potential consumers can find your business (make sure the information on the page is correct as Google will reward you for it in their map algorithms).  You also have the opportunity to add photos as a business owner to control what is being shown on this page.

YouTube is so useful to show motion; a vibrant method of sharing information.  Videos are so effective in informing potential customers on product  benefits, promotions and motivating them to purchase products.   Customers as well as people from the business can be featured in the videos to show different perspectives.  Videos can also be used to educate how best to use products and to stay engaged with consumers after they purchase from you.

Here's to exploring social media,

Marla Hope

  1. I like the bright pink and light background you chose as a theme, it helps me focus on the blog itself. I like how you chose this look in order to show little of yourself, that being organized minamilism and that you like the color pink. Can't wait for the pictures you want to add and the different shades of pink you want to show.

  2. I like the color pink too. If you like the idea of posting one photo with text you should probably use Instagram.

  3. Marla, I really enjoyed reading your first post and enjoyed the pleasant tone you set with your theme, the color scheme, and even the font you used for the title of your blog. I thought the phrase "organized minimalism" was spot on! The sign off was a great personal touch, which I wish I has used. I also appreciated your reference to Google's My Business Page. I'm not familiar with that platform, so I'll have to check it out.

  4. Hey Marla! I love the pink, not a ton of people would use a bold pink like this but I really like it with the font. It has personality and sets the tone of the blog.

Week 4 A: Working on Your Business and Your Target Market

T his week I compare two businesses in the same industry to differentiate between their target audiences based on the design of their websites.  Here are my findings: Rancho Vista Nursery: Initial thoughts:  Beautiful, thriving plants are shown.  Next to which is a blank farmshop from 2018.  Is this what it looks like today?  Why is that photo there?  It looks like they did not update their site,  I may have chosen a faint plant background to envelop the visitor and draw them in.  This theme looks a little disjointed.  The zig zag edges on the photo connotate sewing, not planting to me.  Is about us a link or is this one paragraph all they will tell me.  What an opportunity to showcase the people that work there since they have been in business for 40 years.  Maybe each person specializes in something and I would like to connect with them?  Good, they have an inte...

Week Ten Newsletters--Blog Post One

I think it would be helpful and appropriate to send a monthly newsletter.     As I reach new customers that are at different stages of their recovery and seasons or holidays are good themes to tie into.     Plus, the “woman” power to write it would be comfortable on this timetable.   I am not on an email list for my competitors, but thanks to this class, I will check them out and sign up to learn about what they are doing.     The content my business could use is information about the breast cancer journey, the process of reconstructive surgery, recovery and how patients get through it.   I can also include the fashion part of the business; fibers, manufacturing process, zippers used, colors chosen, fit and laundering.  In addition, customer feedback can be welcome content. Communicatively, Marla Hope
